Zebra Moray Eel

The Zebra Moray Eel (Gymnomuraena zebra) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking zebra-like black and white banded pattern, thick body shape, and relatively docile temperament compared to other morays.

Males typically grow larger and bulkier, while females/juveniles tend to be slightly smaller and more slender in build. They reach about 60–65 inches (5 feet) in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 180 gallons.

Provide plenty of live rock with caves and hiding spots, along with a stable sandbed and secure rockwork, since this eel enjoys sheltering in crevices. A tight-fitting, secure lid is essential, as moray eels are known escape artists.

Maintain stable water parameters: salinity 1.020–1.025, temperature 72–79°F, and pH 8.1–8.4.

Diet should consist mainly of crustaceans (crabs, shrimp), mollusks, and meaty marine foods. They generally do not prey on fish, making them more peaceful than other moray species. With proper care, the Zebra Moray Eel makes a standout addition to a large marine aquarium, both for its beauty and unusual behavior.
