Yellowtail Damselfish

The Yellowtail Damselfish (Dascyllus flavicaudus) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe, admired for its contrasting coloration, hardy nature, and active swimming behavior. Males typically display territorial behavior and may show more vivid coloration during breeding, while females and juveniles are slightly less territorial but share the same striking dark body with a bright yellow tail. They reach about 3 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons.

Provide plenty of live rock with hiding spots and open swimming space, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and ensure a secure lid since many damselfish are prone to jumping. Their diet should consist of a mix of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, quality marine pellets, and some algae-based foods. With proper care, this fish makes a hardy and vibrant addition to the aquarium.
