The Yellow Spotted Moray Eel (Echidna xanthospilos) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking black body covered in bright yellow spots, serpentine form, and secretive yet fascinating behavior.

Males typically exhibit larger body size with more pronounced head shape, while females/juveniles tend to be smaller and may display slightly less intense coloration. They reach about 28–30 inches in adulthood and should be housed in aquariums of at least 125 gallons.

Provide ample live rock with caves and crevices for hiding, a sandy or mixed substrate, and secure rockwork to prevent collapse, along with a tight-fitting lid, as moray eels are skilled escape artists. Stable water parameters are essential: salinity 1.020–1.025, temperature 72–79°F, pH 8.1–8.4.

Their diet should consist of meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, crab, clams, silversides, and other marine-based proteins. They may refuse dry foods like pellets. Feed sparingly 2–3 times per week, as overfeeding can cause health issues. With proper care, this eel makes a stunning and unique showpiece species, though tankmates should be chosen wisely to avoid predation.
