Yellow Spiny Box Burrfish Pufferfish, Juvenile

The Yellow Spiny Box Burrfish Pufferfish (Chilomycterus schoepfii, juvenile) is a semi-aggressive species that is generally reef-safe with caution, admired for its bright yellow coloration, striking spiny appearance, compact size, and unique defensive inflation behavior. Juveniles display shorter spines and a vibrant yellow body, while adults reach about 8–12 inches, with males typically more robust and spines more pronounced.

These fish thrive in aquariums of at least 75 gallons, providing a combination of sandbed, live rock, hiding spots, and open swimming space. Stable water conditions are essential, with salinity around 1.020–1.025, temperature 72–79°F, and pH 8.1–8.4, and a secure lid is recommended as puffers are prone to jumping.

Their diet should consist of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, high-quality pellets, and occasional algae or shellfish to maintain health and dental wear.
