Yellow / Red / Orange Sponge (Axinella sp.) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its bright coloration, branching structure, and unique filter-feeding nature. Males and females are not visually distinct, and juveniles appear as smaller encrusting or branching forms before developing their full sponge structure. They reach about 6–12 inches depending on growth and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons.
Provide ample live rock for attachment, shaded areas away from direct light, and stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4). Unlike fish, sponges are sessile and do not require a lid.
Diet should consist of dissolved organics, phytoplankton, and specialized sponge/reef supplements, as they are filter-feeders relying on microscopic food in the water column. With proper care and a nutrient-rich, stable reef system, this sponge makes a standout and vibrant addition to the aquarium.
