Yellow Moon Sponge

The Yellow Moon Sponge (Ceratoporella nicholsoni) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its bright yellow coloration, unique moon-like rounded growth form, and ability to add striking contrast to reef displays. Unlike fish, this sponge does not display sexual dimorphism — individuals look similar regardless of age or sex. They can reach about 12 inches across in optimal conditions and should be housed in aquariums of at least 50 gallons.

Provide ample live rock for attachment and shaded areas with moderate water flow, stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020-1.025, temp ~72-79°F, pH ~8.1-8.4), and avoid direct, intense light since many sponges are sensitive to it.

Diet should consist of microplankton, dissolved organic matter, and specialized sponge foods or phytoplankton supplements provided through the water column. Because sponges rely on filter-feeding rather than active hunting, maintaining high water quality and steady plankton availability is crucial. With proper care, this sponge makes a standout and unusual addition to the aquarium, enhancing biodiversity and natural reef aesthetics.
