Yellow Head Butterflyfish (Chaetodon xanthocephalus) is a peaceful species that is not reef-safe, admired for its vivid yellow head, white body with vertical grayish lines, and contrasting black markings along the eye and dorsal area. This species is known for its large size compared to other butterflyfish and its elegant, gliding swimming style. Males typically are similar in appearance to females but may grow slightly larger and exhibit more vibrant head coloration during courtship, while females/juveniles tend to be smaller and have a more subdued yellow tone until they mature. They reach about 10 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 180 gallons.

Provide ample live rock for grazing, open swimming space, and some hiding spots, as this fish is both active and appreciates occasional shelter. Maintain stable water parameters: salinity 1.020–1.025, temperature 72–79°F, and pH 8.1–8.4. A secure lid is recommended, as this species may jump if startled or during periods of adjustment.

Diet should consist of a variety of foods, including frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, copepods, marine algae, sponge-based preparations, and high-quality pellets. In the wild, they feed on coral polyps and benthic invertebrates, which means they are not suitable for reef aquariums, as they will likely nip at or consume corals and sessile inverts.

With its bold coloration, peaceful nature, and larger presence, the Yellow Head Butterflyfish makes a striking and graceful addition to large, fish-only or FOWLR (Fish-Only With Live Rock) systems when cared for properly.
