The Yellow Blotch Rabbitfish (Siganus guttatus) is a very large and highly effective herbivore, best recognized for the large, characteristic yellow spot located on its flank near the tail. Given its potential adult size, which can exceed 17 inches, it absolutely requires a large aquarium of at least 180 gallons with extensive open space for swimming and ample live rock for grazing. As an herbivore, its diet must be overwhelmingly vegetarian and should be consistently supplemented with quality marine algae, such as nori sheets, spirulina, and various other vegetable-based foods. It is considered reef-safe with caution; while it is an excellent grazer of nuisance algae, it may occasionally nip at or consume soft corals and certain large polyp stony corals if it is not kept well-fed. It is generally peaceful toward non-rabbitfish but should be housed singly or in a confirmed mated pair due to aggression toward similar species.
