Yellow Belly Dogfish Pufferfish

The Yellow Belly Dogfish Pufferfish (Arothron nigropunctatus) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking yellow belly contrasting with a darker upper body, unique black spot patterns, large expressive eyes, and robust size. Males typically display more vibrant belly coloration and may exhibit territorial behavior, while females and juveniles are generally paler and less aggressive. They reach about 12–18 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 125 gallons to accommodate their size and swimming needs. Provide a sandy substrate, abundant live rock for hiding and grazing, caves or overhangs, and open swimming space, along with a secure lid since these puffers are prone to jumping. Maintain stable water parameters with salinity around 1.020–1.025, temperature between 72–79°F, and pH 8.1–8.4. Their diet should consist of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, high-quality pellets, and occasional algae, with hard-shelled foods included to prevent beak overgrowth. With proper care, this species makes a captivating and standout addition to a large marine aquarium.
