Wounded Wrasse

Wounded Wrasse (Halichoeres chierchiae) is a rare, reef-safe (with caution) beauty that really pulls its weight in any marine display. Adults reach about 7-inches, and display striking color transitions — juveniles are mottled tan and white with a white cheek and multiple eye spots (ocelli) on the dorsal fin; as they mature, they develop richer tones of green, blue, and yellow, with a vibrant red patch above the pectoral fin that gives it its “wounded” signature. Males and females differ noticeably, males being more vivid in color and pattern. They thrive in tanks of 100+ gallons with deep sand for burying at night or when startled, abundant live rock for grazing and hiding, stable tropical marine water (salinity ~1.020-1.025, temp ~72-78°F, pH ~8.1-8.4), and a tight lid because wrasses like this can escape. Diet should be carnivorous: small crustaceans, mollusks, worms, frozen meaty preparations, and enriched foods to bring out the vibrant colors.
