The Wire Netting Leather Jacket Filefish (Cantherhines sandwichiensis) is a generally peaceful species that is considered reef-safe with caution, as it primarily grazes on algae and detritus but may occasionally nip at soft corals or invertebrates. It is admired for its striking coloration, featuring a gray to nearly black body, blue lines on the head, and distinctive white spots at the base of its transparent yellow dorsal and anal fins, making it a standout in any aquarium.
Males typically reach about 7–8 inches in length, while females and juveniles are slightly smaller, and they should be housed in aquariums of at least 55 gallons. A proper setup includes plenty of live rock for grazing, hiding spots, and open swimming space, along with a secure lid since this species is prone to jumping. Stable water parameters are essential, with salinity around 1.020–1.025, temperature between 72–79°F, and pH of 8.1–8.4.
Its diet should consist of algae, detritus, sponges, tunicates, and other benthic organisms, supplemented with meaty foods like mysis and brine shrimp. With proper care, this filefish becomes a fascinating and attractive addition to a peaceful reef or marine aquarium.
