The Wide Bar Black Gladiator Ocellaris Clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris) is a peaceful to semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe, admired for its distinctive wide white bars, bold black-and-orange coloration, and striking patterns.
Males typically remain smaller, with slightly slimmer bodies and may develop more submissive behavior within the pair hierarchy, while females/juveniles are larger, more dominant, and become the breeding individuals if a pair is formed.
They reach about 4–4.5 inches in adulthood and should be housed in aquariums of at least 20–30 gallons (larger is preferred for pairs or community setups). Provide ample live rock for hiding spots, open swimming space, and optional anemones or coral hosts, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp 72–79°F, pH 8.1–8.4) and a secure lid since clownfish may jump.
Diet should consist of a varied mix of meaty foods (mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods), high-quality marine pellets, and occasional algae-based foods. With proper care, this fish makes a standout addition to reef aquariums due to its unique appearance, manageable size, and compatibility with many reef inhabitants.
