Whitetail Dottyback

My species/animal is a fish — Whitetail Dottyback (Manonichthys alleni). It is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking jet-black body contrasted by a vivid white tail, compact size, and bold, inquisitive personality.

Males typically grow slightly larger and may become more territorial during breeding or when defending a cave or rockwork, while females/juveniles are generally smaller and slightly less intense in coloration and behavior. They reach about 3 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons.

Provide plenty of live rock with caves and hiding spots, as well as open swimming areas, stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid since many dottybacks, including this species, are known jumpers.

Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped marine meats, and high-quality pellets or frozen foods, and with proper care, this fish makes a standout addition to the aquarium thanks to its dramatic coloration and active, engaging behavior.
