Whitespotted Pygmy Filefish

The Whitespotted Filefish (Cantherhines dumerilii) is a peaceful species that is generally reef-safe with caution, admired for its distinctive coloration, unique patterns, and vibrant orange tail.

Males typically exhibit deeper orange caudal spines and darker eye coloration, while females and juveniles are slightly duller in color. They reach about 15 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 120 gallons.

Their environment should include ample live rock, caves, and crevices for grazing and hiding, a sandy substrate, and open swimming space, with stable water parameters—salinity around 1.020–1.025, temperature 72–79°F, and pH 8.1–8.4. A secure lid is essential since many filefish are prone to jumping.

Their diet should be varied, including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, algae, and high-quality pellets. With proper care, this species’ gentle nature and striking appearance make it a standout addition to the aquarium.
