White Face Butterflyfish

White Face Butterflyfish (Chaetodon mesoleucos) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its elegant contrast of colors—featuring a pale white face and chest that transitions into a deep bluish-black body, accented by a yellow tail and dorsal fin. This minimalistic yet bold coloration makes it a standout species in any marine aquarium. Males typically are similar in appearance to females but may grow slightly larger and exhibit more vibrant coloration during spawning behavior, while females/juveniles are generally smaller and may show a slightly duller overall tone until maturity. They reach about 5 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 75 gallons.

Provide ample live rock for grazing and shelter, along with open swimming space, as this species is active but appreciates cover to reduce stress. Stable water parameters are key: salinity 1.020–1.025, temperature 72–79°F, and pH 8.1–8.4. A secure lid is recommended, as they can jump when startled or adjusting to a new environment.

Diet should consist of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, copepods, high-quality pellets, and algae- or sponge-based foods, as they naturally feed on small invertebrates and coral polyps in the wild. Due to this, they may occasionally nip at corals, making them reef-safe with caution—success in reef tanks depends on individual temperament and careful monitoring.
