Wheeler's Watchman Shrimp Goby

Amblyeleotris wheeleri, commonly known as Wheeler's Watchman Shrimp Goby, is a peaceful species that is reef-safe. It is admired for its striking coloration with a sandy-beige body marked by orange to reddish spots, a slender body shape, and its fascinating symbiotic relationship with alpheid shrimps.

Males typically are slightly larger and may display more intense coloration during breeding or territorial behaviors, while females and juveniles tend to be smaller with somewhat paler markings. They reach about 4 to 5 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons.

Provide a deep sandbed to allow burrowing and shrimp partnerships, live rock for shelter and foraging, and open swimming spaces. Maintain stable water parameters: salinity around 1.020–1.025, temperature between 72–79°F, and pH 8.1–8.4. A secure lid is recommended since gobies can be prone to jumping.

Diet should consist of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and high-quality sinking pellets. With proper care, Wheeler's Watchman Shrimp Goby is a captivating and active addition to reef or marine community tanks, particularly appreciated for its unique behavior and partnership with burrowing shrimp.
