Western Striped Cardinalfish

The Western Striped Cardinalfish (Apogon victoriae) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its distinctive bold horizontal stripes, compact size, and striking silver and black coloration. Males typically exhibit brighter coloration and may guard the eggs during breeding, while females and juveniles tend to be slightly less vivid and more schooling in behavior. They reach about 3 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons.

Provide a sandbed with plenty of live rock and ample hiding spots, along with some open swimming space. Maintain stable water parameters with salinity around 1.020-1.025, temperature between 72-79°F, and pH around 8.1-8.4. A secure lid is important since many cardinalfish species are prone to jumping.

Their diet should consist of small meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and high-quality pellets. With proper care, the Western Striped Cardinalfish makes a standout addition to the marine aquarium.
