Western Foxfish Hogfish

The Western Foxfish Hogfish (Bodianus frenchii) is a semi-aggressive species that is considered reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking orange-yellow body with bold white patches, strong patterns, and distinctive hogfish profile.

Males typically develop more vibrant coloration with brighter contrast and slightly larger size, while females and juveniles display softer hues with less defined markings. They reach about 16–18 inches in adulthood and should be housed in aquariums of at least 180 gallons to accommodate their active swimming behavior.

Provide ample live rock for hiding spots, open swimming space, and a soft sandbed. Maintaining stable water parameters is crucial: salinity 1.020–1.025, temperature 72–79°F, and pH 8.1–8.4. A secure lid is strongly recommended, as hogfish are known jumpers.

Their diet should consist of a variety of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, krill, chopped seafood, and enriched frozen preparations, occasionally supplemented with pellets and marine-based proteins. With proper care, the Western Foxfish Hogfish becomes a hardy, long-lived, and eye-catching centerpiece fish in a large marine system.
