Western Blue Devil Grouper

Western Blue Devil Grouper (Paraplesiops meleagris) — a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its brilliant deep-blue coloration with white spotting, bold patterns, and striking presence. Males typically display brighter, more intense coloration and grow slightly larger, while females/juveniles are duller in shade, with less pronounced markings.

They reach about 12–15 inches (30–38 cm) in adulthood and should be housed in aquariums of at least 150–180 gallons. Provide ample live rock for caves and hiding spots, along with some open swimming space, and ensure stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4). A secure lid is recommended, as they can be prone to jumping.

Diet should consist of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, krill, and quality marine carnivore pellets, though some may accept frozen preparations. With proper care, the Western Blue Devil Grouper makes a rare and stunning showpiece fish for advanced aquarists.
