The Wedgenose Skate (Dipturus whitleyi) is a semi-aggressive species that is not reef-safe, admired for its distinct wedge-shaped disc, subtle brownish-gray coloration with mottled patterns, and streamlined body adapted for gliding over sandy or muddy substrates. This species is appreciated by aquarists for its elegant bottom-dwelling swimming style and unique shape. Males typically have smaller, more elongated discs and develop claspers near the pelvic fins, while females and juveniles are broader-bodied, more robust, and grow steadily with age.
They reach about 30–36 inches in total length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 400–500 gallons, with plenty of bottom space for resting and swimming. A fine sandbed is essential to protect the delicate underside, along with open swimming areas and some rockwork or shaded hiding spots for comfort. Stable water parameters are crucial, with salinity at 1.020–1.025, temperature between 72–79°F, and pH of 8.1–8.4. A secure lid is recommended, as skates may attempt to jump or climb when startled.
Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, small crustaceans, chopped fish, squid, clams, and other meaty marine foods, occasionally supplemented with high-quality sinking pellets. With proper care, the Wedgenose Skate makes a striking and graceful addition to a marine aquarium, showcasing both its distinctive wedge shape and elegant gliding behavior.
