Volitan Lionfish

Volitan Lionfish (Pterois volitans) is an aggressive predatory species that is not reef-safe as it will consume any fish, shrimp, or crab small enough to fit in its mouth. This iconic predator displays bold red, maroon, and white vertical stripes across its robust body with dramatically elongated, fan-like pectoral fins and venomous dorsal spines that create one of the most recognizable silhouettes in the marine aquarium trade. As the classic lionfish that most aquarists envision, this species combines striking beauty with formidable hunting ability, making it the ultimate centerpiece predator. It can reach about 15 inches in adult size. Best kept in tanks of at least 120 gallons or more, with plenty of open swimming space to showcase its majestic presence, moderate water flow, stable water parameters, and extreme caution around the venomous spines which deliver dangerous stings requiring immediate medical attention. Its diet should include a mix of live or frozen meaty foods—whole fish, large shrimp, crabs, squid—as well as marine pellets once established, though most specimens readily accept prepared foods once acclimated and become reliable feeders with consistent feeding schedules.
