The Vermiculated Rabbitfish (Siganus vermiculatus), also known as the Maze Rabbitfish or Scribbled Spinefoot, is one of the largest and most dramatically patterned members of the family, prized for its exceptional algae-grazing capabilities. Its body is covered in a complex, maze-like pattern of dark brown or maroon lines over a silver-blue to pale gray background, often with a patch of golden yellow on the head. This highly effective herbivore is peaceful but large, reaching an adult size of up to 18 inches, necessitating an aquarium of at least 150-200 gallons with extensive open swimming space and ample live rock for grazing. The Vermiculated Rabbitfish is considered reef-safe with caution; while its diet should be heavily focused on marine algae (nori, spirulina, and vegetable matter) for optimal health and to keep it from nipping at soft or large polyp stony corals, its natural diet often includes algae found on mangrove roots and seagrass. Like all rabbitfish, care must be taken when handling this species due to its venomous dorsal, anal, and pelvic spines, though it is not aggressive.
