Variegated Cardinalfish

The Variegated Cardinalfish (Fowleria variegata) is a peaceful to semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking variegated coloration, intricate patterns, and moderate size. Males typically display more intense coloration and may exhibit slight territorial behavior, while females and juveniles tend to be less colorful and more social. They reach about 6 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 50 gallons.

Provide a sandbed with plenty of live rock and ample hiding spots, along with some open swimming space. Maintain stable water parameters with salinity around 1.020-1.025, temperature between 72-79°F, and pH around 8.1-8.4. A secure lid is important since many cardinalfish species are prone to jumping.

Their diet should consist of small meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and high-quality pellets. With proper care, the Variegated Cardinalfish makes a standout addition to the marine aquarium.
