Twospot Hawkfish

Twospot Hawkfish (Amblycirrhitus bimacula) is a small, hardy, and secretive species of hawkfish characterized by its cryptic coloration of irregular brown or reddish bars and spots over a lighter body, with its most distinctive feature being two large, pale-edged black spots: one on the gill cover (opercle) and one at the base of the soft dorsal fin. Unlike other hawkfish that perch openly, the Twospot Hawkfish is a benthic species that prefers to remain hidden within the interstices of rock, coral, or rubble on seaward reefs. This fish only reaches a maximum length of about 3 to 3.5 inches (8.5 cm). It requires a minimum aquarium size of 30 gallons or larger and an abundance of complex rockwork, crevices, and caves to satisfy its shy, secretive nature. It is generally considered Reef Safe with Caution: it will not harm corals, but like all hawkfish, it is a predator and will actively hunt and consume small, motile crustaceans (like shrimp) and very small fish that can fit in its mouth. Due to its solitary nature, it should be kept one per tank, and its diet must be composed of varied meaty foods such as frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and other fine-particle marine meats.
