Twobelt Cardinalfish

The Twobelt Cardinalfish (Apogon taeniatus) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its distinct twin black body bands, translucent body, small size, and shy nocturnal behavior. Males typically develop a slightly more robust body and are known for mouthbrooding, carrying fertilized eggs in their mouths until they hatch, while females/juveniles are more slender and slightly less vividly marked. They reach about 2 to 2.5 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 20 gallons, preferably with calm tank mates.

Provide ample live rock, hiding spots, and shaded areas, as this species prefers low light and crevice shelter. Maintain stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and ensure the tank has a secure lid—like many cardinalfish, they may jump when startled.

Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, and finely-sized marine pellets or frozen foods. With proper care and a peaceful environment, this small but striking cardinalfish makes a beautiful and unique addition to reef and nano aquariums.
