Two Spot Goby

Signigobius biocellatus, commonly known as the Two Spot Goby, is a peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution due to its potential to dig extensively in the substrate. It is admired for its distinctive pattern of two large black spots on a pale body, sandy coloration, and unique behavior of creating and defending burrows.

Males typically are larger with more pronounced coloration and may become territorial around their burrows, while females/juveniles are smaller with slightly less vivid markings. They reach about 6 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 50 gallons to provide ample space for their burrowing activities.

Provide a deep sandbed for digging and burrow construction, live rock for shelter, and open swimming areas. Ensure stable water parameters: salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, and pH ~8.1–8.4. A secure lid is important as they are prone to jumping.

Diet should consist of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, small crustaceans, and sinking pellets. With proper care, the Two Spot Goby makes a fascinating and visually striking addition to the aquarium, especially appreciated for its natural sand-sifting and burrow-building behavior.
