The Two Bar Rabbitfish (Siganus doliatus), also known as the Scribbled Rabbitfish, is an exquisitely patterned and diligent herbivore, making it a valuable addition for natural algae control in the larger marine aquarium. This striking species boasts a yellow-green body covered in intricate, blue-lined markings, often described as 'scribbles' or 'pencilled streaks', highlighted by two distinct black bars: one over the eye and another just behind the gill plate. While generally peaceful towards other fish, it is best kept singly or as a mated pair, as it may be aggressive towards other rabbitfish; its venomous dorsal spines offer defense against more aggressive tank mates. Growing to a maximum size of about 10 inches, the Two Bar Rabbitfish requires a minimum tank size of 120-150 gallons with ample live rock for grazing and open swimming areas. Its reef-safe status is conditional ("with caution")—though it primarily consumes nuisance algae (including hair and bubble algae), it may nip at soft and large polyp stony corals if not kept constantly well-fed with a diverse, algae-heavy diet, including nori, spirulina, and high-quality herbivore pellets.
