The Truncate Cardinalfish (Cheilodipterus singapurensis) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its bright orange-red coloration, bold vertical stripes, compact size, and distinct truncate tail fin. Males typically display more intense coloration during breeding and exhibit territorial behavior, while females and juveniles are slightly smaller with less vivid colors and more streamlined bodies. They reach about 4 to 5 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 40 gallons.
Provide a sandy substrate with ample live rock formations and plenty of hiding spots, stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid as this species is prone to jumping.
Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, pellets, and occasional algae-based foods. With proper care, this fish makes a striking and active addition to marine aquariums.
