Tinkeri Butterflyfish

Tinkeri Butterflyfish (Chaetodon tinkeri) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking coloration featuring a bright white body, bold black upper half, and a brilliant yellow patch on the posterior dorsal fin and tail, making it one of the most visually stunning butterflyfish available in the hobby. Males typically may exhibit slightly more vivid contrast and slightly larger size, while females/juveniles are smaller and may have less defined color separation until maturity. They reach about 6 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 100 gallons.

Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots, along with open swimming space, as this species prefers both shelter and room to explore. They come from deeper reef zones, so subdued lighting or shaded areas in the tank can help mimic their natural habitat. Maintain stable water parameters with salinity around 1.020–1.025, temperature between 72–79°F, and pH around 8.1–8.4. A secure lid is important, as Tinkeri Butterflyfish can jump when startled or during nocturnal activity.

Diet should consist of a varied mix of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, high-quality marine pellets, and algae-based foods. Offering sponge-based foods is beneficial, as it mimics their natural diet in the wild. While generally peaceful and less likely to nip corals than other butterflyfish, they may occasionally sample sessile invertebrates, making them reef-safe with caution.
