Tiger Pistol Shrimp

The Tiger Pistol Shrimp (Alpheus bellulus) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking orange and white banded coloration, unique snapping claw, and interesting burrowing behavior.

Males typically display a slightly larger snapping claw and are more territorial, while females/juveniles are smaller and less dominant, often seen hiding within burrows or sand. They reach about 3–4 inches and should be housed in aquariums of at least 20 gallons.

Provide a deep sandbed for burrowing, live rock for shelter, and plenty of hiding spots, while leaving some open swimming space. Maintain stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4) and a secure lid, as many shrimp are prone to escaping.

Diet should consist of small meaty foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and finely chopped seafood, and with proper care, this shrimp makes a fascinating and standout addition to the aquarium, especially when paired with a compatible goby in a symbiotic relationship.
