Three Banded Butterflyfish

Three Banded Butterflyfish (Chaetodon humeralis) is a peaceful species that is not reef-safe, admired for its bold black vertical bands against a silvery-white to yellow body, rounded shape, and graceful swimming behavior. It is especially recognized for the three prominent black bands—one through the eye, one behind the gill cover (humeral area), and one near the tail. Males typically look very similar to females, though they may grow slightly larger and exhibit more intense coloration during courtship, while females/juveniles are smaller and may have slightly paler banding until full maturity. They reach about 7 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 100 gallons.

Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding, along with open swimming space, as this active species appreciates both shelter and room to explore. Maintain stable water parameters with salinity around 1.020–1.025, temperature between 72–79°F, and pH around 8.1–8.4. A secure lid is recommended, as Three Banded Butterflyfish may jump, especially in response to stress or sudden movement.

Diet should consist of a varied mix including frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, copepods, marine pellets, and algae-based foods. In the wild, they feed on coral polyps and invertebrates, which makes them unsuitable for reef tanks. However, in a fish-only or FOWLR (Fish-Only With Live Rock) setup, they are a striking and peaceful addition when properly cared for.
