Thompson's Butterflyfish

Thompson's Butterflyfish (Hemitaurichthys thompsoni) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its elegant, uniform silver-gray to bluish-gray coloration, streamlined body shape, and calm schooling behavior. Unlike many butterflyfish, it lacks bold patterns or eye-stripes, giving it a sleek and minimalist appearance that makes it stand out in a unique way. Males typically are similar in appearance to females, though may exhibit slightly more assertive behavior during spawning, while females/juveniles remain slightly smaller and display the same overall muted coloration. They reach about 7 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 120 gallons, especially if kept in groups.

Provide ample open swimming space, live rock for grazing, and peaceful tank mates, as this species is very active and does best in a spacious environment. Stable water parameters are essential: salinity around 1.020–1.025, temperature between 72–79°F, and pH around 8.1–8.4. A secure lid is recommended since these fish may jump if startled.

Diet should consist of frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, marine pellets, and algae-based foods. In the wild, they are plankton feeders, so offering frequent, small feedings of meaty and plant-based items helps mimic their natural diet. With proper care and space, Thompson’s Butterflyfish makes a peaceful and graceful addition to a reef or community marine aquarium.
