Tesselata Eel (Gymnothorax favagineus). It is an aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking honeycomb-like black-and-white pattern, impressive size, and powerful predatory nature. Males typically grow larger and bulkier, while females/juveniles are generally more slender with slightly finer patterning. They reach about 72 inches (6 feet) in adulthood and should be housed in aquariums of at least 180–300 gallons, depending on the specimen’s size.
Provide ample live rock with caves and hiding spots, along with a soft sandbed and some open swimming space. Ensure stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and use a secure, heavy lid, as these eels are escape artists.
Their diet should consist of meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, fish, and other marine flesh. With proper care, the Tesselata Eel becomes a dramatic centerpiece, showcasing both beauty and power in the marine aquarium.
