The Tassled Sea Hare (Aplysia sp.) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking coloration, elaborate tassel-like appendages, large size, and slow, graceful movements.
Males typically are slightly smaller and may exhibit more active behaviors during mating, while females and juveniles are generally larger, with tassels developing as they mature. They reach about 12–14 inches and should be housed in aquariums of at least 50 gallons.
Provide a deep sandbed, plenty of live rock, hiding spots, and open swimming space, maintain stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and ensure a secure lid, as these animals are prone to climbing or accidental jumping.
Diet should consist of various algae, especially red and green macroalgae, supplemented with plant-based foods as needed. With proper care, the Tassled Sea Hare makes a unique and captivating addition to a marine aquarium.
