The Tailspot Blenny (Ecsenius stigmatura) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its small size, bright orange coloration with a characteristic black spot at the base of the tail, expressive “perching” behavior, and ability to graze on algae.
Males typically exhibit slightly larger size, more vibrant coloration, and sometimes display fin extensions during courtship or territorial behavior, while females/juveniles are smaller with subtler coloration.
They reach about 2.5 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 10–20 gallons. Provide ample live rock with algae growth, caves/hiding spots, and some open swimming space, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4). A secure lid is essential since they are prone to jumping.
Diet should consist of algae (film and microalgae), spirulina, marine pellets, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and other prepared foods. With proper care, this fish makes a hardy, active, and personality-filled addition to reef aquariums.
