Swordtail Jawfish

Swordtail Jawfish (Lonchopisthus micrognathus) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its elongated body, distinct sword-like tail, unique jaw structure, and subtle coloration blending sandy browns and whites. Males typically display slightly larger size and more vibrant coloration during breeding displays, while females/juveniles are smaller and less vividly marked. They reach about 4-5 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons.

Provide a deep sandbed for burrowing, plenty of live rock for shelter, and hiding spots, as well as open swimming space. Stable water parameters are essential (salinity ~1.020-1.025, temperature ~72-79°F, pH ~8.1-8.4), and a secure lid is important since many jawfish species are prone to jumping. Diet should consist of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and high-quality frozen or pellet foods.
