Surge Wrasse

Surge Wrasse (Thalassoma purpureum) is a large, powerful, and brilliantly colored wrasse that adds both drama and nonstop movement to big aquariums. Adults showcase striking green and blue hues accented by bold red to purple facial stripes, while juveniles tend to display more subdued banding before transitioning into their vivid adult phase. This species can reach up to 18 inches, making it one of the giants of the wrasse family, and requires a very spacious aquarium of at least 300 gallons with ample open swimming room, rocky structures for cover, and a sandy substrate. A secure lid is absolutely essential, as they are strong jumpers. Known for their semi-aggressive nature, Surge Wrasses are best housed with other large, assertive fish in FOWLR or predator systems and are not suitable for delicate reef aquariums, as they may consume small invertebrates. Their diet should be rich in meaty fare—mysis, krill, shrimp, clams, chopped seafood, and high-quality frozen or pellet blends—to sustain their size, energy, and coloration.
