Sunset Wrasse

Sunset Wrasse (Thalassoma lutescens) is a dazzling, high-energy wrasse admired for its bold colors and constant activity in large aquariums. Juveniles often appear in a bright yellow “banana” phase, while adults mature into an explosion of vibrant blues, greens, oranges, and pinks across the body, resembling a living sunset. This species can grow up to 12 inches and thrives in spacious aquariums of at least 180 gallons, with wide open swimming areas, rocky structures for cover, and a sandy bottom. A secure lid is absolutely necessary, as they are powerful jumpers. Semi-aggressive in temperament, they do best with other strong, active tankmates in FOWLR or predator systems, as they may pick at small invertebrates and are not recommended for delicate reef setups. Their diet should be rich in meaty offerings—mysis, krill, shrimp, chopped seafood, clams, and high-quality frozen or pellet blends—to maintain their size, energy, and brilliant coloration.
