The Invertebrate Sugarcane Shrimp (Parhippolyte uveae) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking red and white banded coloration, long elegant antennae, and cryptic patterns.
Males typically have slightly longer rostrums and more pronounced body markings, while females and juveniles tend to be smaller with less intense coloration. They reach about 2–3 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 20 gallons.
Provide a deep sandbed, plenty of live rock, and multiple hiding spots to mimic their natural burrowing habitat, along with open swimming space for exploration. Maintain stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid, as these shrimp are prone to jumping.
Diet should consist of frozen or live mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and finely chopped meaty foods, supplemented occasionally with prepared invertebrate pellets. With proper care, this shrimp makes a standout and visually striking addition to a reef or marine aquarium.
