Striped Triggerfish

The Striped Triggerfish (Xanthichthys lineopunctatus) is a peaceful species that is considered reef-safe with caution, admired for its slender body shape, subtle striped and spotted coloration, and active swimming behavior. Males are typically more colorful, displaying brighter and more distinct horizontal striping and spots, while females and juveniles tend to show duller tones with less pronounced markings.

This species reaches about 10–12 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 180 gallons, with ample live rock for shelter, open swimming space, and a sandbed. A secure lid is essential, as triggerfish are known to jump. They thrive in stable water conditions with salinity between 1.020–1.025, temperatures of 72–79°F, and a pH of 8.1–8.4. Their diet should include a variety of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, krill, copepods, enriched pellets, and occasional algae or seaweed to ensure proper nutrition. With the right environment and care, the Striped Triggerfish makes a hardy, striking, and rewarding addition to a large marine aquarium.
