Striped Blue Rim Derasa Clam

The Striped Blue Rim Derasa Clam (Tridacna derasa) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its large size, smooth elongated shell, striking blue-rimmed mantle with subtle striped patterns, and robust hardiness.

Males typically exhibit slightly more intense mantle coloration with pronounced blue edging, while females/juveniles often have softer, less vivid coloration and smaller shells during early growth stages. They reach about 12 to 20 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 150 gallons.

Provide a stable substrate of sandbed or rubble, flat live rock for secure attachment, and open swimming space around them. Maintain stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and use a secure lid to prevent accidental jumping or tank disturbances.

Diet should consist primarily of photosynthesis via symbiotic zooxanthellae, supplemented in juveniles by phytoplankton or marine snow if necessary. With proper care and lighting, this clam makes a majestic and eye-catching centerpiece for large reef aquariums.
