Striped Blenny

The Striped Blenny (Meiacanthus grammistes) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its bold horizontal black stripes, striking yellow coloration, venomous fangs used for defense, and hardy aquarium nature.

Males typically are similar in appearance to females but may display slightly more vivid coloration and territorial behavior during breeding, while females/juveniles tend to be smaller with more subdued striping.

They reach about 5–6 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons. Provide ample live rock with hiding spots, open swimming space, and a secure lid (they are jumpers), along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4).

Diet should consist of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, high-quality marine pellets, and other meaty marine foods, with occasional algae-based offerings.

With proper care, this fish makes a standout addition to reef aquariums, both for its beauty and its unique defensive adaptations.
