Streaked Rabbitfish

Streaked Rabbitfish (Siganus javus) is a peaceful species that is completely reef-safe, making it an excellent choice for mixed reef systems as it poses no threat to corals or invertebrates while focusing primarily on algae grazing. This distinctive rabbitfish displays a silvery-white to pale yellow body decorated with numerous dark horizontal streaks and lines running along the length of the fish, creating an elegant striped pattern complemented by the characteristic rabbit-like face and constantly working mouth used for continuous algae consumption. The subtle streaked patterning and diligent grazing behavior make it both a refined beauty and highly functional reef maintenance crew member. It can reach about 16-18 inches in adult size. Best kept in tanks of at least 180 gallons or more due to their substantial adult size and active swimming nature, with abundant live rock for natural algae growth, excellent water quality, and careful handling around their venomous dorsal spines, though they're generally very peaceful and often develop engaging personalities with their owners. Its diet should focus heavily on marine algae—nori sheets, spirulina, dried seaweed, quality herbivore pellets—with occasional meaty supplements like mysis shrimp, as this primarily herbivorous species requires constant access to plant matter for optimal health and will provide excellent nuisance algae control while maintaining their elegant streaked appearance.
