The Stoplight Parrotfish (Scarus viride) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its brilliant coloration, striking sexual dimorphism, grazing behavior, and ability to transform reefs through algae control and bioerosion.

Males typically display a vivid mix of turquoise, green, yellow, and pink, with distinctive “stoplight” yellow patches near the pectoral fins, while females and juveniles are usually reddish-brown to gray with white spots and less vibrant markings.

They reach about 12–18 inches in adulthood and should be housed in aquariums of at least 180 gallons. Provide a deep sandbed, plenty of live rock for grazing, open swimming space, and hiding spots, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4). A secure lid is essential since parrotfish can be powerful swimmers and may jump.

Diet should consist of marine algae, nori sheets, spirulina-based pellets, mysis shrimp, enriched brine, copepods, and other herbivore-friendly foods, as their natural feeding involves scraping algae from rocks and corals. With proper care, the Stoplight Parrotfish makes a standout centerpiece in large marine aquariums, though it is best suited for advanced aquarists due to its size, feeding needs, and environmental impact.
