The Stocky Anthias (Pseudanthias hypselosoma) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its bold body shape, vibrant red-orange coloration, and graceful schooling behavior. It gets its name from its more robust, “stocky” body compared to other anthias species.
Males typically exhibit more intense reddish-orange coloration with deeper shades along the dorsal area, and may develop elongated fin extensions, while females/juveniles are smaller and display a more uniform orange or pink hue with less pronounced fins.
They reach about 5 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 90 gallons, especially when kept in harems or groups, which mimics their natural social structure.
Provide ample live rock for hiding spots, open swimming space, and a secure lid, as anthias are known to jump. Keep stable water conditions: salinity at 1.020–1.025, temperature between 72–79°F, and pH between 8.1–8.4.
Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets or flakes. Due to their high metabolism, they should be fed 2–3 times daily.
With proper care, the Stocky Anthias is a hardy and colorful schooling fish that adds movement and vibrancy to any reef aquarium.
