Starry Pufferfish

The Starry Pufferfish (Arothron stellatus) is a semi-aggressive species that is not reef-safe, admired for its striking coloration, intricate star-like patterns, large size, and unique ability to inflate when threatened. Males typically display more intense coloration and may exhibit territorial behavior, while females and juveniles are generally less vivid and more peaceful. They reach about 36 inches (3 feet) in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 250 gallons to accommodate their size and swimming needs. This species thrives in environments with a sandy substrate, plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding, and open swimming space, alongside stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020-1.025, temperature ~72-79°F, pH ~8.1-8.4). A secure lid is essential, as these puffers are prone to jumping. Their diet should consist of a mix of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, meaty pellets, and occasional algae, which helps maintain beak health and overall nutrition. With proper care, the Starry Pufferfish makes a remarkable and eye-catching centerpiece in a large marine aquarium.
