Stark's Tilefish

The Stark's Tilefish (Hoplolatilus starcki) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its vibrant coloration of pale lavender and bright yellow, elongated body, and graceful hovering and burrowing behavior. Its striking color patterns and dynamic swimming style make it a visually captivating addition to larger reef aquariums.

Males typically grow slightly larger, display more intense yellow and lavender coloration, and may have slightly longer fin extensions, while females and juveniles are smaller, paler, and exhibit less pronounced coloration. They reach about 6–8 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 120 gallons.

Provide a deep sandbed for burrowing, scattered live rock for hiding, and open swimming areas. Stable water parameters are essential (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid is recommended, as tilefish are prone to jumping.

Diet should consist of frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and high-quality sinking pellets. With proper care, the Stark's Tilefish adds striking color and engaging burrowing behavior to reef or marine aquariums, making it a standout centerpiece species.
