Spotted Wobbegong Shark

My species/animal is a fish — Spotted Wobbegong Shark (Orectolobus maculatus) — a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its intricate spotted and mottled camouflage pattern, flattened body shape, large size, and distinctive beard-like barbels around the mouth.

Males typically develop thicker claspers near the pelvic fins and may have slightly bulkier bodies during breeding season, while females/juveniles are smaller with less pronounced pattern intensity and smoother skin. They reach about 72 inches (6 feet) in length as adults and should be housed in aquariums of at least 500 gallons.

Provide a soft sandbed for resting, plenty of live rock and caves for hiding spots, and ample open swimming space. Maintain stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and ensure a secure lid since these sharks are strong swimmers and can jump.

Diet should consist of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, small fish, squid, and high-quality carnivorous pellets. With proper care, the Spotted Wobbegong Shark makes a fascinating and standout addition to a large marine aquarium.
