Spotted Snake Eel

The Spotted Snake Eel (Myrichthys sp.). It is a semi-aggressive species that is considered reef-safe with caution, admired for its elongated snake-like body, striking spotted patterns, burrowing behavior, and unique appearance.

Males typically display slightly larger body sizes and bolder patterns, while females and juveniles are slimmer, with subtler coloration that becomes more pronounced as they mature. They reach about 28–36 inches in length as adults and should be housed in aquariums of at least 125 gallons.

Provide a deep sandbed for burrowing, ample live rock for hiding spots, and a secure lid since these eels are known escape artists. Stable water parameters are essential: salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature 72–79°F, and pH 8.1–8.4. Their diet should consist of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, krill, silversides, chopped squid, and other protein-rich marine fare. With proper care, the Spotted Snake Eel makes a striking and unusual addition to the aquarium, best suited for experienced aquarists.
