Spotted Rockskipper Oyster Blenny

Spotted Rockskipper Oyster Blenny (Istiblennius spilotus) is a peaceful to semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its unique spotted body pattern, cryptic coloration, and comical perching behavior.

Males typically display brighter and more contrasting patterns, sometimes with extended fins and territorial posturing, while females/juveniles are generally duller in color, smaller, and less territorial. They reach about 5–6 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons.

Provide ample live rock with algae growth, hiding spots, and a sandy or rocky substrate for grazing, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4). A secure lid is essential, as blennies are known jumpers.

Diet should consist of algae (both naturally growing and supplemental), spirulina, nori, and prepared herbivore diets, supplemented with mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and quality pellets. With proper care, this fish makes a hardy and entertaining addition to a marine aquarium, often acting as a natural algae grazer while showing off quirky personality.
